PLA vs PETG vs ABS: Which Filament Should You Use?

TL;DR

  • PLA — easiest to print, rigid, low heat tolerance. Default for everything decorative and most functional indoor parts.
  • PETG — the middle: nearly as easy, tougher and more heat-resistant, strings more. Default for anything that lives in a car, holds water under load, or must not shatter.
  • ABS — strongest and most heat-tolerant of the three, hardest to print (warping, fumes), wants an enclosure. Use it when the part demands it, not by default.

PLA: the default that’s right 80% of the time

Prints on basically any machine with any profile, sharp details, minimal warping, no meaningful fumes. Its two real limits: it’s brittle (snaps where PETG bends) and it softens in a hot car (~60 °C). If neither applies to your part, use PLA. Picking spools: best PLA filament.

PETG: when the part has to survive

The upgrade path: water bottles, clips, brackets, anything outdoors or in vehicles. Ductile instead of brittle, better layer adhesion, ~80 °C service temperature. Costs you: more stringing (dry it — see stringing fixes), slightly softer details, and a bit more tuning per brand.

ABS: only when demanded

Functional strength, real heat tolerance, acetone smoothing — and in exchange: severe warping without an enclosure, draft sensitivity, and VOCs that want ventilation. Modern printers with enclosed chambers (see enclosed CoreXY comparison) made ABS viable again, but it’s still a materials-discipline choice. ASA exists for the same strength class with better weather resistance — usually the better outdoor ABS-substitute today.

FAQ

Is PETG stronger than PLA?

It depends what 'stronger' means: PETG is more ductile (bends instead of snapping) and has better layer adhesion; PLA is stiffer and holds finer detail. For functional parts that take impact, PETG wins; for rigid precision parts, PLA is fine.

Can I print ABS without an enclosure?

Small parts, sometimes, with brute-force bed adhesion and no drafts. Anything larger will warp or crack at the layers. ABS really wants an enclosed chamber — that's a machine decision before it's a settings decision.

Which filament should a beginner start with?

PLA, unambiguously: easiest to print, no fumes, no enclosure needed, and it covers most first-year projects. Add PETG when a part needs toughness; ABS only when a specific part demands its heat tolerance.
